Fred Ball: Zions Bank Speaking on Business

A while back, Jake and Kathleen Garn incited my wife Joyce and me to dinner. They promised us an outstanding dining experience. We didn’t know where we were going as we drove up Parley’s Canyon. We assumed either Park City or Deer Valley, but we went past that turnoff and soon arrived in Kamas, Utah.

Kamas, Utah?? For an “outstanding dining experience?” Yes! Yes, indeed it was. Jake pulled his car into the parking lot of the Gateway Grille. It looks like a hamburger and chili house from the outside . It is located at 215 So. Main in Kamas and the sign proclaimed, “The Gateway Grille, Gateway to the Quintals.”

The ambiance inside was comfortable and the patrons were dressed in everything from suits and ties to cutoffs and tank-tops. There were cowboys and bankers, locals and tourists from the posh Deer Valley resorts; families and couples.

In looking at the menu, we discovered you could indeed get a hamburger if you wanted but the continental cuisine offered was very sophisticated and extensive.

I enjoyed a mussel/saffron bisque that was to die for; a Chilean sea bass with mango chutney and a delicious crème brulee. Not bad for a nondescript little eatery in Kamas.

The owner, chef, and manager is Sean Wharton. He worked in Deer Valley for 14 years and was famous for his seafood buffets. He wanted to go on his own but stay in the beautiful Summit/Wasatch County environment. He found this little location to create his dream and put it into reality. The chef and wait staff are very professional, the décor comfortable. The food….amazing.

Thanks Jake Garn for the introduction to this gem. I owe you.
